Holly Roberts: Paint to Collage/Collage to Paint
June 17 - 21, 2024, AIR Studios Santa Fe
This 5-day workshop includes optional open studios June 21-23. Bring or ship work from home, or just show work you made in the workshop. Artists earn 100% and pay no gallery commissions.
This class will explore as many different aspects of constructing the collage as possible with paint acting as the integrating element. By using acrylic paint over and under the constructed collages, students will learn not only how to build their collages, but also how to paint both supportively and expressively.
By understanding how the different media work together, each student will be able to understand what process works best in finding his/her own creative voice. We will cover transfers, gluing techniques, compatibility of media, and how to work with acrylic paints. Materials will include but not be limited to: paint, photographic imagery, found objects, organic material, cloth and three-dimensional objects, drywall mud, and contact paper…anything that will hold paint.
First day: Prep panels, slide presentation of student work, painting demo. Students start painting. Afternoon demo on use of computers/printer.
Second day: Morning demo on contact paper, palette paper, and parchment paper transfers. Afternoon demo on direct gluing Red River transfers
Third day and fourth Day: students work on painting and building images using techniques learned.
Fifth day: Students work in the morning; critique in the afternoon and then clean up
About the instructor
Holly Roberts, born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, earned an M.F.A. from Arizona State University, Tempe, in 1981. Her pieces are nationally and internationally exhibited and have been published in five monographs. She has twice received National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships. Roberts works intuitively, obscuring all but the figures in her photographs, allowing them to float in the surrounding paint. Her metamorphic beings illustrate archetypal emotional or dream states; her selective use of color further supplements the symbolism of her universal subject matter.
In 2024, Roberts will have a retrospective exhibit of her work at the San Diego Museum of art, in conjunction with a book that will be published with the exhibit. She is also due to have a one person exhibit at the Center for Visual Arts at the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio.
